Joss Odom falls down stairs for a living. She's a broke, stunt-trained day-player on an Atlanta soundstage, an "aggressively unbookable" utility body with eleven hundred dollars, half a shotgun house, a truck that starts on the third try if she loves it, and a granular understanding of exactly how disposable she is. Then she wakes up one morning with a fever, a mouth that tastes like a penny, and two brand-new problems the universe forgot to warn her about.

The first: she can feel bad luck coming. Stand her next to a person and she gets a fuzzy weather report on them — a storm cloud, a wrongness, a wince — impressionistic, frequently wrong, and impossible to turn off. The second, and far worse: her filterless inner monologue leaks aloud in fragments, to anyone standing close, exactly when she least wants it to. Her mouth stays shut and innocent while her brain broadcasts war crimes to the room. Keeping her head down was the plan. It was never going to survive contact with reality.

Because her first real on-camera job is a fight scene — in which she has to beat up Ryder Kade, the country-pop megastar making his acting debut, a man she's quietly, mortifyingly a fan of, and a man she's "read" a storm cloud on and is now irrationally desperate to protect. Every take, her thought-leak sabotages the shot. Every take, Ryder breaks character to stare at the day-player whose commentary keeps floating out of thin air. When the clip goes viral — "the nobody who made Ryder Kade lose it" — Joss becomes an accidental industry darling, and the machinery that decides who counts as talent starts, quietly, to circle.

Ryder Kade has been managed within an inch of his life since a talent manager found plain Dale Kade singing in a Bowling Green sports bar. He is tired of being a product. And the one person on the whole lot who treats him like a person — who saves his skin without wanting anything, who cannot be handled — is a jinx-sensing day-player who'd rather sprain a wrist than be rescued. So he makes her a two-way vow: he'll never treat her as a product, and she'll never weaponize her gift — she warns, she never manipulates. He decides, half joke and all truth, that whether she's a nobody or not, he'll keep her as his top star. She decides that's the most dangerous sentence anyone's ever aimed at her.

Then, on one televised music-awards night in Atlanta, with her found-family about to be gutted and both their careers in the blast radius, they each break their half of the vow at the exact same hour. Cornered, Joss stops warning and starts engineering — she weaponizes the gift she swore she'd only ever use to warn, and it detonates messily, catching an innocent in the fallout. Cornered too, Ryder lets the machine package her as his discovery, his project, his asset — the one thing he swore he'd never do. Two people who promised never to become the thing that used them do it on the same glittering night, and it all comes apart at the exact moment she finally wins.
